I waited patiently for
the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out
of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and
established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto
our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall put their trust in the Lord. Psalms 40:1-3
We are gathered here as a
congregation, nevertheless, God is speaking to us as individuals. Yes, I may
know that my friends have challenges, still I need God for myself. That’s why
our text began with the singular word, “I”.
It’s me that knows for how long I have been waiting. Even if I cannot speak for
others, I can speak for myself. When David said, “I waited patiently”, it does not mean he was just idle. No! Waiting
time is a time of Praying, Trusting, Believing, Obedience to God’s instructions
and promptings in your spirit (giving). To proof that waiting time is not a
time of idleness, we saw the immediate result that followed: David said, “and he inclined unto me”.
To incline is
to bend over; to make somebody to take a course of action. While waiting, David
got engaged with God to the point that he secured His attention. Lam. 3:25-26
says “The Lord is good unto them that
wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both
hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord”. Waiting time is not
idle time; it’s a time when God is sought for. During waiting times, there
appears to be no external activity, yet something awesome is being birthed.
Luke 24:49 – Acts 1; 2:1-4. The disciples were waiting in the upper room; they
had stayed for 50 days waiting when Pentecost came. And it came while they were
waiting. They were in an upper room in Jerusalem for 50 days, and there were no
news of their presence. Why? It is because during waiting times, there aren’t
really much external activity.
Not only did God inclined/bent over to hear David’s cry, He
did something else. That was why David used the word, “also”. He said, “He brought me up also”. God proofed
that He heard his cry by bringing him out. It is good enough that God will hear
your cry, however, it will be better that he brings you out. And I say, “You
are coming OUT in the mighty name of JESUS”.
But you know it was his cry while waiting that God heard. Mk. 10: 46-52
(Blind Bartimeaus). When Jesus stood still, it was symbolic of Him inclining to
Bartimeaus cry. However, he did something also: He called him, which symbolizes
bringing him out of that condition.
Perharps, there are those waiting in this gathering, I don’t’
know; I can only speak for myself. I want to say this: there’s no point pretending that all is well,
when it is not, especially when we are before God, the King of Kings who knows
us through and through. Neh 2: 3 says, “And
said unto the King Let the king live forever: why should not my countenance be
sad, when the city, the place of my father’s sepulchers, lieth waste, and the
gates thereof are consumed with fire?” Shunamite woman in 2 Kings 4: 27-28.
Why should I not be disturbed when the enemies are ravaging my life without
anyone stopping them. Come and cry to HE
who can bring you out of an horrible pit; to HE that can put A NEW SONG in your mouth. 1 Sam 2:8
Verse 2 and 3 reveals why David had to cry even while waiting:
He had been put in an horrible pit, and made to walk on miry clay. When a man
is in a pit, he is below the ground. As worst as it is to be on the ground,
such a man is below the ground level. That is, he has a long way to go; humanly
speaking, his case is beyond redemption. When a man is in a pit, he is shut
from the view of his helpers. Aside the horrible pit, has miry clay on his feet
and around him. Sand/dust represents shame, no one wanted to associate with
him. (SAND-sea shore)+WATER = CLAY (greatly impedes movement). “A man of
potentials cannot express himself; grounded; sickness”. LK 7:14, Mk. 5:24-29,
John 5:1-9 (sorrow and hopelessness; shame, sicknesses, illness, and poverty;
stagnation). That man was in that horrible pit for 38 years. He had missed
angelic visitation 38 times. If Jesus had not met him that year, he would have
counted his 39th year, and perharps exhaust his lifetime in an
horrible pit. But, JESUS showed up. In Acts 3:1-10, the man was born lame from
his mother’s womb. He was placed in an horrible pit right from the womb. He had
a foundational
horrible pit, doomed to live through life incapacitated. Joseph was pushed into
an horrible pit because of the family he was born into. Some are in
horrible pit because of their family affiliation; environment (previous
and present); actions and inactions,
words.
Still in Verse 2 and 3, after God had removed David from
horrible pit and miry clay, the first thing HE did was to put his feet upon a
rock. Why? So that he will be established and not be moved. How will God
established you on the rock today? Mt 3:16-17. On your acknowledgment and
confession that JESUS IS CHRIST, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD lies the rock upon
which your feet will be established.
God wants to put A NEW SONG in my mouth. He wants to incline to your cry, and bring you out of the horrible pit and miry clay, and established you on the rock only on your acknowledgment and confession that JESUS IS CHRIST, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD. He is dealing with individual (you as a person now). Don’t be a shame of coming out because of your friends or relatives. It is when HE has put a new song in your mouth than many will see and hear. But you should come first!
