And there
shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of
his roots: Isa 11:1
“Back to the root”, is God’s
express command to you now. The two most important words in the statement “Back to the root”, are back and root
respectively. The word, “back”, connotes that an individual has left a position
or place, where he/she needs to return to. Back also connotes “movement away
from”. Root, on the other hand has many meanings. There are several ways that
the word, “root” can be interpreted. Agriculturally, the root is the part of
the plant that grows under the ground and absorb water and minerals that it
sends to the rest of the plant. In all the interpretations and illustrations of
the word, “root”, one basic truth you’ll keep discovering is that the root is
the basis; it’s the beginning, or the central focus.
Most importantly, the root we’re
looking into is more indepth. It’s not just a root, but The Root. This Root is
The Origin. God formed man from the dust of the earth, His breath into the
nostril of man, made him a living soul. In other words, man is God’s product,
and God is man’s origin.
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed
into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Gen 2:7
Back to the root is a call to
return. Among other things, It’s a call by God to return to a Person, a Place,
and a Lifestyle. This is by no means exhaustive of the magnitude of His calls to us, it is just
a few out of many that were selected.
The Root Is A Person.
The Root
is Jesus Christ Himself, The Way, The Truth, and Life. The prophecy in the anchor
text in Ish 11:1, was about Jesus Christ. All things were made by him, and
without him was not anything made that was made. Jesus is the Source. He says,
“I am
Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, which is, and which was, and
which is to come, the Almighty.” Back to the Root, is
therefore, a call to you to return to your Source. The root of the prodigal son
was his father, so when he came to his senses, he said, “I will set out and go
to my father…” If you’ve not known The Lord, or you knew Him before and went
your own way, the call is to you. He’s saying, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give
you rest”. The more reason why you have
to come to Him now is because, your coming to this world was orchestrated by
him. If He had not allowed you to come, there’s no way you would have been
here. No way! Moreso, it is a universal
truth, that a river that forgets its source will dry up.
That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into
the world. John 1:9
The Root Is A Place
The Root is a Place because it is
a foundation. Infact, it is the Foundation. Paul wrote in 1 Cor.3:11
“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus
Christ.”
Jesus is the only firm foundation
that can stand when the storms of life start raging. Definitely, the storms
will come; it’s just a matter of time. The Root is also a foundation because it
not only holds the beginning, but also guarantees the end. The Root is also the
place of the throne of God. We have been asked to come bodly before the throne of grace to seek for
mercy and help in times of need. How
often do you go there?
That Christ may dwell in your hearts by
faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love. Eph
3:17.
You’re to
return to a life of love. You’re to be rooted and grounded in it. To be rooted
means to be strongly influenced by something. You know that God is love. So
when you become rooted and grounded in God, who is the perfect definition of
love, then you can be partakers of heavenly blessings on this earthly terrain. When
you’re not rooted in Christ, you become rootless, and when you’re rootless, you
become useless.
The Root Is A Lifestyle
The Root is a
lifestyle, hence, Proverbs 22:18 says, “Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set”.
The lifestyle includes: holiness, prayers, study of the word, fellowshipping
with brethren, soul winning, giving, etc. what God seeks for is a relationship
not religion. The bible says the Father seeks for true worshippers who will
worship Him in spirit and in truth. In Antioch, Syria, the disciples were first
called Christians because they were Christ-like. Your lifestyle both in public
and private should model Jesus Christ. A good test for that is this: before you
do, say, wear, anything, ask yourself, “if Jesus were to be in my condition
presently, what would he have done?” Your sincere answer to this question, will
help you to know what exactly to do.
The command to you today, even right now is,
“Back to the Root!”.
