Therefore
we aught to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest
at any time we should let them slip by. Hebrews 2:1
There are certain things that a lot of
people take for granted. This unfortunate development sprang out from
carelessness. We hear a lot of things,
and I mean beneficial things, however, our reactions to those things have not
been encouraging. God loves us to
dearly, and that is why HE never ceases to send His word to us continually.
That is why the bible says, “His words
are new every morning”. That simply tells us that there is a word for you
everyday. For everyday you wake up in the morning to see the sun rise on the
eastern horizon, there is a word for
you. So, there is a word for you today,
part of which the Holy Spirit has brought your way on this platform. Therefore,
I urge to receive this engrafted word that is able to bring succour to every
aspect of life where you may be hurting.
Our
anchor text says,”…we aught to give the
more earnest heed”. It is a
collective decision that we(You and I) should make that we will give the more
earnest heed to the things which we have heard, seen and have been taught by
the God, His messangers and from the pages of the scriptures. One of the ways
by which we can give the more earnest heed to these things is by fellowshipping
together. The writer of the Hebrews in chapter 10 verse 25 urged us not to
forsake the assemblies of the brethren as the manner of some is. As we
fellowship together, we are sharpened and shaped together to become better than
we were or than we could ever be alone.
In those days, the first questions that believers ask themselves
whenever they meet is: “Have you had your quiet time today?” If your answer to
that question is no today, by tomorrow I’m sure you will not want to give the
same answer. Directly or indirectly you have been spurred; the more time you
spend with God, the better you become.
We can give the more earnest heed to the
things which we have heard by committing ourselves to it. What does it mean to
commit yourself to something? Among other things, it means to direct our
undivided attention and loyalty to that thing. To “commit ourselves to these
things” could also mean to instruct and disciple others who will be able to
appropriately teach others about the things we have taught them without
compromising the message.
It is possible to have accepted Christ and
be saved; it is equally possible to neglect this so great a salvation. Verse 2
of Hebrews Chapter 3 says, “How shall we neglect this so great a
salvation; which at the first began to
be spoken the Lord, and was confirmed unto us
by them that heard him” The work of salvation that Jesus Christ
executed on the cross is a great work. Infact , it is the greatest work of all
times. This salvationtranslated us from the kingdom of darkness to God’s
kingdom; It made us acceptable in the beloved; It made us heirs of God and
joint heirs with Christ, so we can say that Jesus Christ is our eldest brother.
This so great a salvation gives us the hope of glory: the hope of beholding our
Lord and our Love someday.
When your commitment to god, His word, and
His assignment is compromised, you are beginning to neglect this so great a
salvation which was once delivered to you. It is not as if you’ve abandoned it,
it’s just a neglect. Need I remind
you that there’s a close association
between these words: neglect and negligence. When things that are very precious
to God are no longer precious to you, you’ve began to neglect this so great a
salvation. When you compromise divine standards and you don’t see an y big deal
about that, I think you’ve gone too far. So you need to retrace your step back to the Lord, so that together
we can continue on the journey giving
the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we
should let them slip by.
